NORTHMARK LEARNING ROOM / Financial literacy
Build, protect, grow, transfer: four connected financial habits.
A simple way to organize ongoing conversations about your family’s money and priorities.

Build: create breathing room
Start by understanding what comes in, what goes out, and what is available for unexpected expenses. A savings habit can begin with an amount that fits your current circumstances.
Protect: understand your safeguards
Review emergency resources and existing workplace and individual protection. Ask whether life insurance includes living benefits, what conditions qualify, and how using an advance affects the remaining death benefit. Availability and costs vary by contract.
Grow: connect money with time
Give each goal a time horizon. Understand fees, access restrictions, and the possibility of loss before discussing investments. Short-term needs and long-term goals may call for different conversations.
Transfer: make wishes clearer
Keep beneficiary information and estate-planning questions current. Ask an attorney about documents and decision-making authority. Revisit the picture after major family changes; no single checklist replaces individualized guidance.
