NORTHMARK LEARNING ROOM / Tax literacy
Three tax buckets: Tax Now, Tax Later, Tax Never?
See how taxable, tax-deferred, and qualifying tax-free accounts differ—and which questions to ask.
Northmark Financial Services ·
Tax Now: taxable accounts
Bank interest, dividends, and realized investment gains may create tax obligations along the way. Withdrawing an original deposit is not, by itself, new income. The type of income and applicable exceptions matter.
Tax Later: tax-deferred accounts
Pre-tax retirement contributions and earnings are generally taxable when withdrawn. Traditional IRAs can also contain nondeductible contributions, which require different treatment. Early withdrawals may trigger additional tax.
Tax Never? Understand the conditions
Roth contributions use after-tax money. Qualified withdrawals are free of federal income tax, subject to age and holding-period rules. “Tax Never” is only a teaching shorthand—not a promise that all taxes disappear.
Connect the idea to your own accounts
Make a list of the accounts you already own. Beside each, write when taxes may apply and when you expect to need the money. Bring unresolved questions to a qualified tax professional; this lesson does not recommend moving funds.
